How To Get From Venice To Sardinia

This post may contain affiliate links. Further info in my disclosure.

Getting from Venice to Sardinia is very easy. I regularly fly this route – in fact, I am going to Venice again next week. So I thought I’d share what you need to know in case you want to travel between La Serenissima (one of Venice’ nicknames) and my beloved island.

Venice is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Italy, packed with interesting sights such as the Doge’s Palace and St. Mark’s Basilica. It’s also very crowded with tourists – to the point that the city introduced a tourist tax for day-trippers. I wouldn’t blame you if you felt like escaping Venice for a quieter place!

That quieter place may well be Sardinia. Though mind you, if you visit Sardinia in August you’d find many of the most famous beaches on the island to be very crowded too.

The good news is that getting from Venice to Sardinia is very easy. Venice is served by two airports (one in the city, one within very easy distance in Treviso, and one in Verona which further away), and there are plenty of Venice to Sardinia flights you can hop on to escape to the island.

If you want information on how to get from Venice to Sardinia, and the best flights from Venice to Sardinia, you are in the right place. Here I will share everything you need to know.

You should also read my post How To Get To Sardinia: Routes From Italy And Europe for more information on how to get to the island from a variety of destination – by plane and ferry!

How To Get From Venice To Sardinia: Venice To Sardinia Flights

Venice Marco Polo Airport

Venice Marco Polo is the city’s main airport, and the easiest one to reach. It’s just 14 km (8.7 miles) from Piazzale Roma, which is the bus and train terminal of Venice and the last point cars can reach.

It takes around around 30 minutes to get from Piazzale Roma in Venice to the Marco Polo Airport by public bus (you can take ATVO Bus 35, ACTV Bus 5 and the E015-V by Busitalia Veneto).

The journey to the airport only takes 20 minutes if you opt for a taxi or take the Alilaguna “vaporetto” (a water bus that’s typical of Venice) or a private water taxi. The vaporetto or the water taxi will leave you at the Darsena of Marco Polo Airport.

Venice Marco Polo Airport is connected to Sardinian airports by direct flights operated by Ryanair and Volotea. Alternatively, you have to fly via Rome on a combination of ITA Airways and Aeroitalia flights, depending on your final destination in Sardinia.

Other airports near Venice

You could also consider flying to Sardinia from Verona Airport, which however is a bit further away from Venice (one hour and 20 minutes by car, and about 2 hours by public transport). There are direct flights from Verona to Cagliari operated by Ryanair.

Finally, there’s Antonio Canova Airport in Treviso, a lovely small town that is actually nice to visit on day trips from Venice. It’s easy to reach: it takes about 35 minutes to get there by car from Piazzale Roma, and one hour and 15 minutes by public transport (train and bus). However, at the time of writing, there are no direct flights from Venice Treviso Airport to Sardinia.

Ryanair flight frequency and schedule varies – during the peak summer months, there are flights 6 days per week, and up to two daily flights on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The departure time changes every day, so I encourage you to visit Ryanair website or to use the Omio app for more details.

Volotea operates two flights per week between Venice Marco Polo and Cagliari Elmas, from June until the second week of October. Again, the departing time varies from one day to the other, so I recommend visiting Volotea website or using the Omio app for more details.

How much do flights from Venice to Sardinia cost?

The prices of Venice to Sardinia flights vary a lot depending on how far in advance you book, on the season, day and even time of your flight, and – since they are all operated by so-called budget airlines – on any additional perk you may want to add such as a specific seat, checked-in luggage etc.

Both Ryanair and Volotea can be very cheap if you fly in the off-season, when there’s less demand, and if you book well in advance. It’s also cheaper if you travel with just a small purse that you can put under the seat in front of you.

If you leave it to the last minute, both airlines can become quite pricey.

Ryanair tends to have more convenient prices, but oftentimes they fly at inconvenient times which means you need to pay extra to get to or from the airport as there won’t be any public transport available.

Flights from Venice to Alghero are more expensive, as they are operated by ITA Airways. In this case you have the option to pick between Economy Light (which only allows you to take carry-on luggage), Economy Classic (the cheapest option if you want to check in your suitcase) and Economy Flex (which allows you to also pick a seat and change your flight if needed.).

You can check the prices of flights from to Sardinia from Venice on the Omio App.

  • Venice to Alghero flight (via Rome Fiumicino): 3 hours and 20 minutes, but it varies depending on how long your connection is.
