How Many Days In Sardinia Are Enough?

This post may contain affiliate links. Further info in my disclosure.

One of the most frequent questions I get from readers who are planning to visit Sardinia is how many days in Sardinia should they spend.

Just a week ago I was doing a consultancy call with a reader who asked me if 6 days in Sardinia were too many (they are not, by the way). I once even got an email from a reader who was thinking of visiting Sardinia on a day trip from Rome (and I advised against it).

Many think that since Sardinia is an island, it can’t be that hard to explore. It’s quite the contrary, actually! Sardinia is a very big island – roughly the size of Vermont. And it’s also very mountainous, which means there are many windy scenic roads and distances take longer than you expect.

To make a long story short, I would suggest that you need at least a week in Sardinia. But honestly the more time you have to explore the island, the better. In general, Sardinia is the kind of place that is best enjoyed at a slow pace.

If you aren’t sure how many days in Sardinia you should spend, I have put together a series of points you may want to consider and a few options depending on how long you wish to spend on the island.

How Many Days In Sardinia Should You Spend?

The good news is that no matter how long you spend in Sardinia, you will have an incredible time. But I know what you came here for! I know you are asking yourself (and me!) how many days in Sardinia you should spend.

How many days in Sardinia you wish to spend is something you need to consider for yourself. It’s not easy to figure out how long to stay in Sardinia.

However, I am here to help. There are a few things to consider when deciding on how many days in Sardinia you should spend. Let’s look at them in a bit more detail.

Where are you coming from?

This is a crucial thing to consider when deciding how many days in Sardinia you should spend. If you are coming from somewhere in Europe such as London, Paris or Amsterdam, travel time won’t take up too much out of your holiday. It’ll be a short flight to get to Sardinia and you could even consider spending just a long weekend in one of our beautiful cities.

You’ll also be in a similar time zone, with no more than two hours difference, and the impact of the trip on your body clock won’t be strong.

On the other hand, if you are coming from North America or even Australia, you are looking into a much longer trip to get here, crossing several time zones, and an 8+ hour flight to either Rome or Milan, where you’ll have a layover before boarding your flight to Sardinia.

You may need some time to recuperate after a long flight, and you may even get jet leg. It would make no sense to fly all the way across the ocean to only spend a couple of days here.

My post How To Get To Sardinia highlights the best ways of getting to the island, including the best flight routes and the best ferry options too.

How long have you got, in total, for your vacation?

If you have 10 days in total for your vacation, it may be worth thinking of spending them all in Sardinia. There’s enough to see and do on the island to never get bored – trust me, I have lived most of my life here and I have yet to see it all.

You could pick several bases to explore, go down the west coast and up the east – the possibilities are endless. Don’t worry, I have itinerary ideas to share with you in a bit.

If you have two weeks, you could split your time evenly between Sardinia and another destination in Italy of even Europe, taking advantage of the many flight connections from the 3 Sardinian airports, or just as easily decide to spend two weeks in Sardinia.

When are you visiting?

Another essential factor to consider when deciding how many days in Sardinia you should stay is the time of year you wish to travel.

Sardinia has a distinct peak season that goes from June to mid-September. That’s when the vast majority of travelers visit to make the most of the incredible beaches on the island.

August in Sardinia is absolutely packed, and there may be more traffic on the road – which means that moving from place to place may take longer, and you will often have to factor in additional time to look for a parking spot in case you are driving.

Also, with so many beaches to see in the summer – some of which protected, for which you need advanced bookings – you may want to stay a bit longer to make the most of them. You could stay one week in Sardinia, and pick no more than two bases to explore the local beaches, or two weeks to hop from one coast to the other.

Sardinia doesn’t get nearly as many visitors between October and May, and if you visit Sardinia in the winter months you will likely have most sites to yourself – there won’t be much traffic, which means moving around and parking outside of the cities is easier.

Don’t worry – there are plenty of incredible things to do in Sardinia in the off season. You could spend 5 days in Sardinia enjoying things such as hiking, festivals (we have wonderful carnival celebrations), archeological sites, museums, food tours and wine tasting and more.

My post The Best Time To Visit Sardinia will help you get a better idea of the best season to visit.

What is your budget?

Another thing to consider when deciding how many days in Sardinia you should spend is your budget. However, this is closely tied to the season and the destinations you wish to visit.

Of course, the bigger your budget the longer you can stay, regardless of the season.

In general, the same budget can stretch a much longer way if you visit Sardinia in the off season; whereas if you wish to visit Sardinia in the summer you will see that hotels and car rentals are more expensive; and boat tours and other activities quickly add up making the trip more expensive – which in turn may restrict the number of days you can spend here.

How do you plan to move around?

Finally, a decisive factor to think about when deciding how long to stay in Sardinia is how you plan to move around the island during your trip.

My overall tip is to rent a car for your trip to Sardinia, as that will give you more freedom to explore and you will be able to manage your time better, especially if you don’t have too much of it. You can reach the most secluded beaches on the island, find the trailheads for the best hiking trails, visit the vineyards and much more.

I have written an extensive guide on How To Rent A Car In Sardinia which shares essential tips on how to pick the best car for your needs, and what kind of insurance you should purchase.

If you don’t wish to drive around Sardinia, you will either have to restrict yourself to one of the cities (most people pick Cagliari or Alghero, as they both have an airport), or factor in more time (I would say at least a week) for your trip to Sardinia, as moving from one place to another will be time consuming.

I should also point out that if you are visiting in the summer, many beaches can’t be reached by bus.

My posts A Guide To Public Transport In Sardinia and How To Travel By Train In Sardinia will explain in more details what you should expect when hopping on a bus or a train on the island.

What To Do Based On How Many Days In Sardinia You have

Now that you have a better idea of how many days you should spend in Sardinia, let’s look at what you could do here based on how long you plan to stay.

3 days in Sardinia

If you only have 3 days in Sardinia, I recommend sticking to a city and exploring locally. You won’t even need to rent a car for your trip, as cities have a good public transportation system.

If your flights land in Cagliari (or you are getting there by ferry) just book a hotel in the city (there are even some incredible beachfront hotels) and take in all that the capital city has to offer.

You can explore the historic center and go on a guided tour of Cagliari underground, hike the Sella del Diavolo or join a kayak or boat tour to visit the hidden coves, spend your day relaxing at the beach in Poetto and much more. There’s enough to keep you busy for 3 days!

My post A Long Weekend In Cagliari is a great itinerary with guidance on daily activities, best restaurants in the city, best places to stay and much more.

Similarly, if your flight lands in Alghero and you only have 3 days, I recommend sticking around the city.

There are plenty of sites to visit: you can explore the historic center on a guided tour, visit the nearby Palmavera Nuraghe and Anghelu Ruju Necropolis and the Neptune’s Caves, take a cooking class or visit Sella e Mosca winery to taste some of the best wines in Sardinia.

My post How To Spend A Long Weekend In Alghero is a carefully crafted itinerary to explore the city and its surroundings and contains recommendations on hotels and restaurants in the city too.

Bosa

4 days in Sardinia

If you have 4 days in Sardinia, your plans shouldn’t change much: again, stick to a city and explore locally. You could consider renting a car or joining a guided group tour for a day to get out of town.

There are endless options for day trips from Cagliari: many opt to visit Su Nuraxi, Sardinia’s only UNESCO site and a prime example of a nuraghe. The trip can be easily paired with a visit of the Giara Plateau, a fabulous nature reserve where you can see one of the few wild horses species remaining in Europe.

And of course, if you are visiting in the summer, you can hit one of the many beaches of South Sardinia that are easy to reach from Cagliari.

If you are staying in Alghero, you could go on a day trip to the lovely Bosa – it’s Sardinia’s prettiest small town. If you are visiting in the summer, consider joining one of the many boat tours in Alghero and even hit Alghero’s gorgeous beaches.

If you land in Olbia, you could base yourself in one of the many good hotels in the city and rent a car to explore the many local beaches or make your way to the scenic Gallura region to explore the archeological sites, the wineries, and the beaches.

Cala Coticcio
Cala Coticcio in Caprera, part of the Maddalena Archipelago

5 days in Sardinia

With 5 days in Sardinia you are once again limited to staying in an area, but you can explore (locally) at a more leisurely pace.

You could consider basing yourself in the incredible La Maddalena Archipelago. There are endless beaches to explore, boat tours to take and hiking trails to paradisiac beaches such as Cala Coticcio or Cala Brigantina.

You could also opt to stay somewhere along the Baunei Coast such as Cala Gonone or Santa Maria Navarrese. From there, you can go on guided boat tours along the Gulf of Orosei (that’s the actual name of the place you may know as Baunei Coast), hike to one of the beaches, or spend your time in the paradisiac Oasi Bidderosa.

Su Nuraxi
Su Nuraxi archeological site in Barumini

A week or 10 days in Sardinia

A week is the minimum amount of time I recommend spending in Sardinia if you are coming from outside of Europe. With this amount of time, you can opt to base yourself in two different areas – but not more – to explore the best hidden gems of Sardinia, the prettiest small towns, and even to attend a festival (there are some festivals in Sardinia each month).

If you have 10 days in Sardinia you can definitely pick two and even three home bases – but no more than that – and explore further, and at a more relaxed pace. You can visit beaches and archeological sites, take a cooking class, enjoy a wine tasting experience and more.

I have drafted several itineraries that you can read that will help you plan your trip and that are all based on 10 days in Sardinia. Here they are:

All my itineraries include a list of day-to-day activities and places to visit. I’ve also included a selection of places to stay and restaurants that I know and love.

I also have seven wonderfully crafted, tested and very detailed itineraries for sale here that are perfect in any season. With these itineraries you also get driving instructions and maps, driving distances, and of course my recommendations on hotels and restaurants.

Final Considerations: How Many Days Do You Need In Sardinia?

If you are still wondering how many days do you need in Sardinia, I would say the more the better, especially if you want to visit all the most iconic beaches and sites. As I have said before, there are many fabulous things to do so you won’t stand a chance at getting bored.

You could spend two weeks in Sardinia, and even more, and explore at a slower pace thus having a more relaxing holiday altogether. I even know some of my readers stay here a month and love it!

One important final tip I have – especially if you only have a few days in Sardinia – is to explore locally. Sardinia is packed with incredible beaches, lovely villages and unique archeological sites, wherever you are.

There really is no need to drive all day to the other side of the island from where you are staying just to visit an archeological site or a beach, because surely there are great places to visit nearby too.

  1. Hi Claudia,

Love your site! My friend and I, we are from Vancouver, BC, Canada. are thinking of visiting Sardinia. We would like to stay a month so thinking of renting a 2 bedroom apartment walking distance to a beach, we would likely rent a car to get around but would like a set place so we can do day trips, and would like to be close to town for groceries and restaurants. An Agriturismo would not be out of the question. Would you have any recommendations?
Thanks so much…we would perhaps take one of your tours or two, they sound very interesting. Cheers, Roberta
