Are you looking for the best Cagliari hotels on the beach? You’re in the right place — but first, a quick reality check.
Cagliari does have beach hotels, but not in the way many people expect. Most are along Poetto, the city’s long urban beach, where hotels are located just across the seafront road rather than directly on the sand. Beyond that, there are also a few waterfront and sea-view hotels in the city, which offer easy access to the beach but a different experience.
Cagliari is my hometown — the city where I grew up and where I live. Over the years, I’ve explored it inside out, including many of its hotels and the different areas where visitors tend to stay. If spending time by the sea is a priority, choosing the right location can make a big difference to your trip.
Thanks to the mild weather, Cagliari and generally Sardinia are a fantastic place to visit all year round and one of the best winter sun destinations in Europe, whether you are planning a long weekend or using it as a base to explore the south of the island.
In this guide, I’ve selected the best Cagliari beach hotels, from those closest to Poetto to a few carefully chosen waterfront stays — all clearly explained so you can decide what actually fits your trip.

Cagliari Beach Hotels At A Glance
- Best area for beach hotels: Poetto – The city’s main beach, where you’ll find almost all seafront stays.
- Closest to the beach: Hotel Nautilus, Hotel Nautilus Excelsior, La Villa del Mare – All sit right on the Poetto seafront, just across the road from the sand.
- Best with pool: Hotel Nautilus, Hotel Nautilus Excelsior – Among the few beach-facing hotels in Cagliari with a pool.
- Best for a relaxed beach stay: Poetto seafront hotels – Ideal if your priority is spending most of your time by the sea.
- Best for city + beach: Palazzo Tirso, Birkin Porto 1870 – Central locations with sea views and easy access to Poetto by bus or car.
- Other seaside options: There are a couple of smaller seaside properties outside Poetto, but I generally don’t recommend them compared to staying directly along the Poetto seafront.
Local tip: Stay on Poetto in the summer, when the area is lively and set up for beach life. Stay in the center in cooler months, when you’ll get more atmosphere, lots of excellent restaurants, and things to do.

What “On the Beach” Means In Cagliari
If you’re searching for Cagliari hotels on the beach, it helps to understand how the city is laid out.
Poetto is Cagliari’s main urban beach and the only area where you’ll find hotels by the sea. It’s a long stretch of coastline that connects the city to Quartu Sant’Elena, and it’s where both locals and tourists go for beach time. If your idea of a beach stay involves stepping out and being by the water within minutes, this is the area to focus on.
It’s worth saying that there are no large resorts directly on the sand in Cagliari. Most properties are located along the seafront road, just across from the beach. In practice, this still feels like a proper beach stay, but it’s different from destinations where hotels sit directly on the sand.
Because of this, many hotels listed online as “beach hotels” are not actually directly on the beach. Some are in the city with sea views, others are near the marina, and will require a short drive or bus ride to reach the beach. They can still be good places to stay, but they offer a different experience.
If staying by the beach is your priority, Poetto is the best choice. If you prefer being close to restaurants and in a more central location, staying in the city and going to the beach during the day can work just as well — it just depends on the kind of trip you’re planning.

Should You Stay In Poetto or In Cagliari Center?
This is the main decision you’ll need to make when choosing where to stay in Cagliari.
Poetto and the city center offer two very different experiences, and neither is “better” — it depends entirely on what kind of trip you’re planning and, importantly, the time of year you’re visiting.
Staying on Poetto means being by the sea. You can walk out of your hotel and be on the beach in minutes, go for a swim whenever you like, and spend most of your time outdoors. Between late spring and early autumn, the area is lively, with beach kiosks, restaurants, and people out throughout the day and into the evening.
In the cooler months, Poetto is still pleasant and very much used by locals — it’s where I go running regularly, and you’ll always see people walking, biking, or stopping for a coffee by the sea during the day. But it’s noticeably quieter, and many of the smaller beach restaurants and kiosks either close or reduce their hours, especially in the evenings.
Staying in the center, on the other hand, gives you a more typical city experience. You’ll have easy access to restaurants, bars, shops, and historical sights, all within walking distance. It’s more atmospheric in the evenings and generally more convenient outside the summer season, especially if the beach is not your only focus.
Stay in Poetto if
- The beach is your priority, and you want to be there within minutes
- You’re visiting between May and October, when the area is fully active
- You’re happy with a quieter setting in the evening outside peak summer
- You plan to spend most of your time outdoors, at the beach or along the seafront
Stay in the center if
- You want restaurants, bars, and more atmosphere in the evening
- You’re visiting between November and April, when Poetto is quieter
- You prefer a more traditional city stay, with everything within walking distance
- You don’t mind going to the beach by bus or car
Poetto and the center are well-connected, so moving between the two is easy. The real difference is how you want to structure your days — whether the beach is the focus of your trip, or something you’ll visit alongside everything else Cagliari has to offer.
In short: Poetto is best for a beach-focused stay between May and October, while the center works better year-round, especially in the quieter months.

Best Cagliari Hotels On The Beach
Poetto is Cagliari’s main urban beach – a long stretch of coastline of about 8 kilometers (almost 5 miles) with soft sand and clear, shallow water.
Facing the sea, on your right, you can see the Sella del Diavolo (Devil’s Saddle) promontory, one of the most recognizable landmarks in the city. You can hike to the top to admire the beautiful view of the beach below – it’s one of the most rewarding short hikes in Sardinia.
Behind the beach, the Molentargius Natural Park, one of the most popular parks in Cagliari, adds another layer to the area: with walking and biking paths, it’s a haven for many species of birds, and known for hosting the largest colony of pink flamingos in Sardinia, which live there throughout the year.
Poetto Beach is very much part of everyday life in Cagliari. Locals use it throughout the year — for walks, runs, bike rides, or simply to sit by the sea. I go there regularly myself, and it’s one of the easiest places in the city to spend time outdoors.
In the warmer months, especially between May and October, the atmosphere changes completely. Beach kiosks, restaurants, pizzerias, and bars open all along the seafront, and the area becomes one of the liveliest in the city, both during the day and in the evening.
Outside that period, Poetto is still worth visiting, but it’s noticeably quieter, particularly at night, when many of the smaller places close or reduce their hours.
It’s also easy to reach from the city center — about 10 minutes by car or public transport — so it’s still a practical base even if you want to explore more of Cagliari.
If you want to stay as close to the beach as possible, this is where to look. The hotels below are all located around Poetto or right by the seafront. From there, it’s easy to step out and be by the water within minutes.

New Bussola
- Located along Poetto, towards the Quartu Sant’Elena side, in a slightly quieter stretch of the beach
- Right on the seafront road, just across from the sand
- Best for a comfortable beach stay with a bit more style and a quieter setting compared to the central Poetto area
- Not as central if you want to be close to the busiest kiosks and nightlife
The Bussola (the literal translation of the name is “compass” in English) has always been a symbol of Cagliari’s waterfront because of its unique location, between the beautiful coastline and the protected Molentargius Nature Park lagoon, where you can often spot pink flamingos, and because it gives the aura of comfort and relaxation.
Some scenes of the movie ‘La Calda Vita’ (The Warm Life), directed by Florestano Vancini, with Catherine Spaak, were filmed here.
The building has been completely renovated in recent years, and the name has been changed to New Bussola. It is now a phenomenal symbol of innovation and eco-sustainability: most of the products you will find here are local and come from a short supply chain.
All luxury suites at the New Bussola face the Sella del Diavolo, so thanks to the outstanding view, the sound of the sea just a few steps away, the heated swimming pool and solarium, you have all you need to spoil yourself. This really is one of the best Cagliari hotels with a pool.
The staff at New Bussola is friendly, helpful, and always professional to give you the best experience.
This is one of the nicest boutique hotels in Sardinia: it also has an outdoor swimming pool, a shared lounge, a garden, a private beach, a SPA, and a restaurant.
Additional services you can sign up for: transport to and from Cagliari airport, water sport activities that can be practiced all year round, guided hike to the Sella del Diavolo, horse riding in Molentargius Nature Park and on Poetto shore, and, last but not least, boat excursions to explore the wonderful coastline of Golfo degli Angeli.
Although it’s expensive, it is worth it.

Hotel Nautilus
- On the central stretch of Poetto, one of the most convenient and lively areas
- Directly on the seafront road, just steps from the beach
- Best for couples and families looking for an easy, comfortable beach stay with everything close by
- Not ideal if you want a quieter or more secluded setting
Hotel Nautilus has a fantastic location: it directly overlooks Poetto, Cagliari’s main beach. You practically walk out of the hotel and find a long sandy beach with turquoise sea, beach clubs with all the amenities, and trails for running, walking, and biking (that’s where I normally go running too, and I always pass by Hotel Nautilus).
Nearby, there are a lot of waterfront restaurants, some of the best gelaterie in Cagliari, and more.
All rooms are decorated in a navy style with blue and white stripes. Some of them have a sea view with a small balcony where you can sit and enjoy a glass of Sardinian wine and Cagliari life.
If you want to spoil yourself, choose a room with a hot tub.
There’s a small swimming pool with sun umbrellas and beds.
The hotel organizes airport transfers for an additional price, and offers bike rental too. It’s a good value for money and overall one of the best Cagliari beach hotels.

Hotel Nautilus Excelsior
- On Poetto, on the main seafront area
- Seafront location, just across from the beach
- Best for couples looking for a quieter, adults-only stay with more space and a more polished feel
- Not suitable if you’re traveling with children
The most recent addition to the city’s beach hotels is the adults-only Nautilus Excelsior. You will find it right on Poetto Beach, not far from the other Nautilus. Of course, this is an even more modern and more luxurious version of its older brother hotel.
Rooms here are spacious and have everything you need for a comfortable stay. Some of them face the inner garden, others have views of the beach and the sea. There are even some that have a jacuzzi for an even more relaxing stay.
If you don’t feel like crossing the road to the beach, you can go to the lovely hotel’s pool.
All rooms have a balcony to enjoy an evening drink or your morning coffee. Breakfast is included in the price of your stay. There’s a restaurant, a bar, and an airport shuttle service for guests, too.

La Villa del Mare
- On Poetto, in a quieter stretch away from the busiest kiosks
- Right across the road from the beach
- Best for couples looking for a smaller, more intimate stay
- Not ideal if you prefer a larger, more traditional hotel setup
La Villa del Mare is an original Liberty Style villa that overlooks the beautiful Poetto beach.
This recently restored villa has an elegant marble and steel stairway; cosy and warm rooms with hardwood floors and walls that recall the color of the sea. Just imagine yourself as you enjoy a book and a glass of wine while you shelter from the sunlight under the ancient olive trees in the garden.
You have several room options, and can choose between deluxe, superior, and junior suite rooms or opt for an apartment if you prefer to have a kitchenette to prepare your meals. Some rooms have a private balcony facing Poetto Beach.
Breakfast is served daily in the hall with views of the beach by the Cherchi family, who run a popular restaurant next door.
The hotel is open to adults and anyone who is 16 years old and above. This choice was made to guarantee a quieter environment for the guests.
Laundry service, transfer to and from the airport, and excursions from Cagliari are some of the services available upon request.
The staff at La Villa del Mare is welcoming, professional, and ready to help you with any additional requests or questions you may have.

Villa Maria Luisa
- On Poetto, facing the sea, with access from a side street just off the seafront
- Steps from the beach — not directly on the main seafront road, but effectively right by it
- Best for a quieter stay right by the beach, slightly removed from the busiest stretch
- No real downside in terms of location — this is as close to the beach as it gets in Cagliari
Villa Maria Luisa is an old family villa facing the sea that has been recently beautifully refurbished.
There’s a beautiful garden where you can relax and have a shower when coming back from the beach.
Rooms have a spacious balcony, overlooking the beach or the garden. If you prefer, you can also opt to stay in a small apartment with a kitchenette.
Additional services include a transfer from and to the airport, a private car service with a driver, and laundry.
You can rest assured that at Villa Maria Luisa, the host will make your stay in Cagliari as pleasant as possible.
Hotel Poetto
- Located in a street just behind the seafront, on the Molentargius side
- About a 1-minute walk to the beach
- Best for budget travelers who want to stay in Poetto without paying seafront prices
- Not on the seafront, so you won’t have direct sea views
Hotel Poetto is located at Poetto, between Molentargius Park and close to the Sella del Diavolo, just about 50 meters from the beach — an easy one-minute walk. You’re not directly on the seafront, but you’re close enough that it makes no real difference day to day.
This is one of the simplest and most affordable options if you want to stay near the beach in Cagliari. It works best for budget travelers or anyone who plans to spend most of their time at Poetto and doesn’t need a luxury place.
The setup is straightforward. Rooms are modern and functional, with a small private outdoor space, which is a nice touch for a budget stay. It’s not a resort-style property, and services are limited, but it’s clean, comfortable, and well located.
You’ll find plenty of bars, restaurants, and beach kiosks within walking distance, so everything you need for a relaxed beach stay is close by.
That said, this is not the right choice if you’re looking for a more polished experience with on-site facilities like a pool, restaurant, or spa.

Cagliari Hotels With Sea Views
If you prefer to stay in the city center, there are several hotels in Cagliari with beautiful views of the sea and the harbor.
These are not beach hotels. You won’t have immediate access to the beach, and you’ll miss the laid-back, seaside feel that Poetto offers — no stepping out for a swim, no beach walks at sunset, and no sea right outside your door.
The experience is completely different. Staying in the center means having restaurants, bars, shops, and historical sights within walking distance, and being able to explore the city easily without relying on a car or public transport.
Poetto is still close, so going to the beach during the day is simple. But the focus of your stay shifts from a beach holiday to a more urban, food and culture-driven experience.
The hotels below are some of the best options in Cagliari if you want sea views while staying in the heart of the city.

Palazzo Tirso
- In central Cagliari, facing the marina and harbor
- Not on the beach — Poetto is about 10–15 minutes away
- Best for a high-end stay in the city, with restaurants, bars, and sights within walking distance
- Beach access requires a short bus or car ride
From Palazzo Tirso you can enjoy one of the most beautiful sunsets in the city: some of the rooms, as well as one of the bars and Cielo restaurant overlook the bay, the harbor, and the beautiful historic buildings on Via Roma, and you can also see the Castello historic district in the distance.
This is one of my favorite luxury hotels in Sardinia. It is set in a stunning and beautifully restored historic palace in the heart of town – Piazza Deffenu, perfectly set between Via Roma, the Marina district, and Villanova district.
Palazzo Tirso features very modern, large, and comfortable rooms.
There’s a small terrace pool for guests. After a long day of exploring, you can also enjoy a SPA treatment in the hotel wellness center, or opt for a training session in the hotel’s fitness center.
The hotel features two bars and two gourmet restaurants – Terra on the ground level, and Cielo on the terrace overlooking the harbor. They are also open to non-guests, and they are a new favorite of locals. I have tried both a few times and loved them.
One more reason that makes this one of the best luxury hotels in Cagliari with sea views? It’s actually pet-friendly, which means you can bring your pet with you during your trip to Cagliari.

The Homeboat Company
- In Marina di Sant’Elmo (Su Siccu), between the center and Poetto
- Waterfront stay, but not near a swimmable beach
- Best for a unique stay on the water, with a very different feel from a standard hotel
- The layout varies by unit — smaller ones are compact, while larger ones offer more space for longer stays
Located in Marina di Sant’Elmo (which we locals call “Su Siccu”), this is a spot right on the water, between the city center and Poetto. It’s not exactly a beach hotel, but a unique waterfront stay with easy access to Poetto by bike or car.
Depending on the size of the boat, it’s a great place to stay for couples or small groups looking for something different from a standard hotel – but on the other hand, it is not ideal if you want a traditional hotel setup or a lot of space (they are cozy, but small inside).
Su Siccu is an area locals use all the time for walks, runs, and sunset views — I run there regularly with friends, and it’s one of the nicest waterfront stretches in the city.
You’re not in the historic center, but it’s an easy and pleasant walk, and there are a few good spots nearby for drinks and food. Dulcis, Tartarughino, and Bacan are all within walking distance — Bacan is one of my go-to places for aperitivo.
Another advantage is how practical the location is. There’s plenty of parking nearby if you decide to rent a car in Cagliari, and bike rental is available, so getting to Poetto or around the city is very easy.
I stayed here recently with a friend, and we really enjoyed it. Waking up on the water is a completely different experience from a normal hotel, and the area is very quiet at night.
There are several boat sizes. We stayed in the smallest one, which was compact but worked well for a short stay. If you have luggage or are staying longer, I recommend choosing a larger option with more space.
Each unit has a small kitchen, and breakfast is included and served at your preferred time. The standout feature, though, is the sundeck, with sunbeds and a hammock — perfect for relaxing by the water.
It’s also pet-friendly, which is a nice bonus if you’re traveling with animals.

Birkin Porto 1870
- In the Marina district, close to the harbor and city center
- Not on the beach — Poetto requires a short bus or car ride
- Best for a central base with easy access to restaurants and sights
- Better suited for a city stay than a beach-focused trip
Birkin Hotel is what we refer to as “albergo diffuso”, that is, a hotel with different facilities located in the heart of Cagliari. My favorite is Birkin Porto 1870 because of the magnificent view of the harbor and the Golfo degli Angeli.
Birkin Porto 1870 is located in Via Roma, one of Cagliari’s main streets with glamorous shops and renowned restaurants. It’s five minutes from the ferry and ten minutes from the train station on foot.
The name is a reference to the year in which the historical palace was built. Rooms have a charming elegance and all the comforts for a pleasant stay. Breakfast is served daily in a lounge overlooking the harbor. The staff is always available to cater to any request you may have.

Marina di Castello
- Between Marina and Castello, in the heart of Cagliari
- Not on the beach
- Best for exploring the historic center on foot
- No real drawbacks if you’re planning a city-based stay
Marina di Castello is an elegant B&B in a historic building located in one of Cagliari’s oldest and liveliest neighborhoods – the Marina historic district.
Some rooms have a view of the historical district of Cagliari called Castello. From the terrace, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the sea and the harbor.
All rooms are elegant with parquet floors and modern furnishings.
The host will help you plan your visit to the city. You will be close to restaurants, bars, shops, and the main public transportation hubs in the city (the harbor, the train station from where you can reach the airport, and the bus station).
Overall, this small hotel is one of the best budget-friendly places to stay in Sardinia.

Right House Sur le Port – Harbour View
- Overlooking Cagliari’s harbor, in a central location
- Best for a central stay with open sea views
- Apartment setup rather than a full-service hotel
- No major downsides if you’re planning a city-based stay
Right House Sur le Port is an excellent choice if you prefer to stay in a self-catering apartment in the heart of the historic Marina district of Cagliari. It is big enough to host up to four guests, and the facility is pet-friendly, which means you can travel to Cagliari with your dog if you want to.
Right House Sur le Port apartments are fully equipped with anything you may need for a wonderful stay. You will have air conditioning and Wi-Fi. The kitchen has a dishwasher, and most apartments have a balcony with beautiful views of the sea.
You will be close to shops, restaurants, and bars, and have easy access to all attractions in Cagliari, as well as the transportation hubs. Poetto Beach is a quick bus ride away – buses drive along Via Roma.
The apartment also offers a bike rental service to explore the city.

More Cagliari Beach Hotels
Do you think the perfect holiday is away from the crowd and with direct access to a lovely, small cove?
The following options are all slightly out of the way, and I recommend renting a car to get around more easily. The added value that these Cagliari beach hotels offer is the distance (or lack thereof!) to the beach: you can fall asleep hearing only the lapping sound of the sea and dive into the water in the morning as soon as you wake up.
If you want breathtaking views of the uncrowded beaches of Cagliari, giving up the close proximity to restaurants, shops, and other comforts, but enjoying the peace and quiet of the sea, these Cagliari beach hotels can be great options.

Villa Rosa
- In the Sant’Elia area, on the eastern side of Cagliari
- Steps from a small local beach (not Poetto)
- Best for a quieter stay by the sea, away from the busier Poetto stretch
- No restaurants and services nearby, and limited public transport: you’ll have to rely on the car
Villa Rosa is one of the best small villas for rent in Sardinia. It will surprise you with its open spaces: it has an incredible view of a small beach accessible by sea or from neighboring houses, so it is not very busy. It almost looks like a private beach.
Facing west, you can enjoy a breathtaking sunset from here, perhaps soaking in the jacuzzi while enjoying a glass of wine.
This tiny house is an outbuilding next to a villa where the host lives. There is a bedroom, a bathroom, and a small kitchen. It’s the perfect choice for a couple, and even more so for independent travelers who prefer self-catering accommodation.
In the garden, you will find sun loungers and an umbrella, snorkels and beach towels, and a stand-up paddleboard to enjoy the sea.
The host is very helpful and will make you feel right at home.

Villa Celeste
- In Sant’Elia, on the eastern side of Cagliari
- Direct access to a small beach, but not Poetto
- Best for travelers who want a quiet seaside stay with more facilities than a simple guesthouse
- Different from the classic Poetto beach-hotel experience, but still genuinely by the sea – you’ll need a car to get around.
Would you like to stay in a villa with private access to the beach? Would you like to relax while enjoying a glass of wine, listening to the waves, and watching the sun go down behind the sea? If your answer is yes, then Villa Celeste is the right place for you.
This is definitely one of the best Cagliari hotels with a pool.
Villa Celeste provides adults-only accommodations and includes different kinds of facilities: from studio apartments for one person or a couple to bigger villas for more people. All accommodation options at Villa Celeste have a kitchenette and an outdoor area with a barbecue and sea view.
Only some of them have a seasonal hot tub or a pool with a view.
There is also a fitness center and kayaks available to explore the beautiful coves around Cala Bernat.
The property is away from the crowd and the traffic, but it’s located just five minutes by car from Cagliari. The host is extremely helpful and provides any information you may find useful during your stay.

FAQs on Cagliari
Yes – they are almost all along Poetto. They are on the seafront road rather than directly on the sand. There are no resorts on the beach in Cagliari.
Poetto is the only real choice. Itìs the city’s main beach and where all beach-facing hotels are located. There is a larger hotel at Calamosca Beach, but it’s not a great place to stay, and I never recommend it. There are also some small self-catering options in Sant’Elia that also offer direct beach access (not Poetto Beach).
About 10–15 minutes by car or bus. It’s an easy connection, which is why many prefer to stay in the center and go to the beach during the day.
Poetto Beach is only 7 km (4.3 miles) from the center of Cagliari and can be easily reached by bus or by bike. Some outer districts of Cagliari, like the Quartiere del Sole, are much closer to the beach. Poetto is also one of the most beautiful areas to live and stay in Cagliari.
It depends on your trip. Poetto is best for a beach-focused stay, while the center is better for restaurants, nightlife, and year-round visits.
Poetto is easily the best area to stay in Cagliari in the summer months, but since it’s so easy to reach, you may want to stay more centrally, in either the Stampace or La Marina historic districts.
There are many beautiful coastal towns in Sardinia. Alghero, the Catalan town on the northwestern coast of Sardinia, is worthy of mention: it has great beaches, a lovely marina, lots of excellent restaurants and accommodation options, and it’s a great base for day trips in the area, including to Bosa and Castelsardo.

Final Considerations
As you can see, you won’t have trouble finding a good hotel on the beach in Cagliari.
Staying by the beach is an excellent choice during the warmer months, roughly between May and September, when Poetto is at its liveliest. This is when locals spend long days by the sea, and evenings move between beach kiosks, restaurants, gelaterie (one of my favorite gelaterie in Cagliari is right along the waterfront), and walks along the promenade.
Hotels along Poetto are open year-round, but if you’re visiting in October or during the winter months, I’d generally recommend staying in the city center instead and choosing a hotel with sea views.
Poetto is still a beautiful place to be in the off-season — I go there regularly myself — but it becomes much quieter, especially in the evenings, with fewer places open. The center, on the other hand, has more going on year-round, with a better choice of restaurants and nightlife.
Wherever you decide to stay, I’m sure you’ll enjoy your time in my hometown.
